KDOC-TV PULLS 'PET PLACE' FROM SCHEDULE

The Pet Place TV Show will have its final airing on KDOC-TV Sunday, Aug. 24 at 6:30 a.m. The door is left open for Pet Place to return to the air if and when its debts can be paid.

"Ralphs has been an important presenting sponsor for three years," said Executive Producer Gary Lycan, "but this year their support was reduced and focused, as it should be, on production of the TV show and its expanding efforts to find homes for the ever increasing number of adoptable animals, and on our combined community outreach efforts. Customer and viewer turnouts at Ralphs stores appearances have strengthened our belief that we are serving a public need. And due to the economy, rescues and shelters are overwhelmed and turned to us more than ever this year to get exposure for their adoptable pets on television.

"At the same time, separate fundraising efforts continued to pay day to day expenses and, most critically, the weekly airtime charges. All non-profits are suffering right now in this economy. KDOC was understanding and cooperative, but the weekly airtime charges ($1,000 a week) had reached $20,000, and they could no longer keep the show on the air if those debts could not be paid," Lycan said.

If the airtime charges can be paid, the door is open to KDOC returning "Pet Place" to the air.

In the meantime, the Pet Place Radio Show with Marie Hulett continues at 6 am Saturdays on 1260 & 540 AM; this website will continue to update visitors on Pet Place news; and the new "Pet of the Week" Friday morning feature is scheduled to continue on KDOC-TV's "Daybreak OC" in the 6 a.m. hour, and beginning Sept. 12, in the 10 a.m. hour on KDOC. So "Pet Place" will still be involved in finding homes for adoptable animals - and, Lycan said, "we hope to be back on TV again very soon."

Comments or questions are invited. E-mail: garylycan@sbcglobal.net

Donations to help get Pet Place back on the air are appreciated.
It is a 5013c non profit, donations are tax-deductible.
Checks can be made to:
The Pet Place, PO Box 16806, Irvine, CA 92523.

2008 "Operation Blankets of Love" Blanket & Towel Drive

Eileen Smulson has been working with shelters and rescue groups throughout Southern California to collect items needed for shelters and rescue groups, and her efforts have been endorsed and supported by LA City Animal Services and other organizations. Her work is called "Operation Blankets of Love." Eileen writes: "We need all the following items to help all the homeless animals in shelter and animal rescue groups"

"We need old or new items blankets and towels in all sizes. Everything must be clean and not ripped.  We also accept bed sheets, pillow cases and pet beds if you want to donate that too.  NEW ITEMS NEEDED: pet treats for dogs and cats. Kitten season is here and more strays than ever are being picked up and we need more BLANKETS AND TOWELS NOW.

"A study by the Compassion Action Institute in New York shows that shelter animals that are given blankets, sheets, and comforters to rest on are more able to relax and get comfortable in their new surroundings while they are waiting to be adopted. Potential adopters are more drawn to animals that appear relaxed and friendly, snuggled on a soft bed which helps to create a more home-like setting. The simple addition of a blanket or comforter to a shelter animal's environment is proven to lead to increased adoptions.

"Here are the locations I have so far to tell your friends and family..or do a blanket drive where you work etc. then drop it off so I can take it to the needed shelters!!"

Pet Place Booth Draws Crowds At OC Pet Expo

Monday, April 14, 2008

Hello Everyone,

First  a big thank you to everyone who participated at the Pet Place booth this year.  Before commenting, here's a roll call of credits....

Maryanne Dell
Mickey Laszlo
Larry Wright (and Jimbo)
Margie Olds
Kerrie Morgan
Hazel Wurfl

==================================================================================

This was the busiest The Pet Place booth has ever been.  Marie's group and the team of Brian Bishop & Robert Morales did an amazing job of shooting Pet Expo events over two days.....And Marie and her family did double duty in the booth, too, talking to visitors.

When Larry Wright performed with Jimbo, he attracted parents and their kids.  And on Sunday in the closing hours, the booth became its own entertainment left as Gary, Hazel and Mickey linked arms to sway back and forth in a "Sing Along" with Larry on "Take Me Home" while Dave , the illustrator, drew some amazing sketches to give out and to go into the Pet Place archives.  Hearty applause came from all the visitors walking by the booth.

All in all, people who came by saw the Pet Place as a family of people who strongly believe in not only finding homes for homeless animals, but having fun, too, and it became infectious.  Of the visitors, some spoke of Fred, others were unaware he had passed away, and many others told us they love the look of the new show - one woman said she loves the crawl because it gives her time to write the address down of the shelter that is on the show at that time.  Others used the word "warm and cozy" to describe the sofa set we use at Irvine Animal Care left. And, yes, one woman said she loved the "raccoon."

Brian and Robert made the rounds, scouting booths for potential advertisers and shooting additional footage for Marie.

TAPING SCHEDULE:

Here's the plan: Pet Place Pet Expo will be the theme of the next three shows - airing April 20, April 27 and May 4.

There will be a taping May 3 with Irvine and Newport Beach shelters participating.  The middle of the May 3 taping will be the "Celebration of Fred" event which takes place that day at Irvine.  It will air May 11.

There will be a taping May 10 at the Irvine anniversary event - the entire show will feature that event and adoptable animals and will air May 18.

==================================================================================

For those of you who were not there -- all the brochures were NEW and will also soon be available on the Pet Place website.

A huge THANK YOU to PCREPO Graphics which did the printing of new brochures, posters, and business cards.  Their address: 1821 Kaiser Avenue, Irvine, CA 92614.  Phone: 949-474-9793.-- website: www.pcrepro.com

By the way, as a sign of how successful we were this year, 300 business cards for all of us there were printed this year and we walked away with only 30 left, so that, alone, is a record.

Dozens of people came by and put their names on our new email list later this week they will all get a thank you note for stopping by our booth.

Brian made the rounds of vendor booths, approaching many as potential sponsors.  Marie also talked to vendors who expressed interest in advertising with us, so all the information has been gathered for follow-up contacts.

Ralphs was the presenting sponsor for Pet Expo, but no company executives were there so we still have no updates on funding.  As soon as we do hear something, we will get the word out to everyone.

But, in the meantime, we're following up with other potential sponsors and looking to the future - and saying thank you to everyone who came to our booth this year and made the Pet Place appearance there very successful.

Thanks,

Gary Lycan
President, Elevad, Inc.

PET PLACE TV SHOW NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT NOW!

Pet Place to be at Pet Expo in Orange County April 11-12-13
"Celebration of Fred's Life" to be May 3 at Irvine Animal Care left

The Pet Place TV Show's goal to is to carry on Fred Bergendorff's wish that The Pet Place would continue to find loving homes for adoptable animals in our local shelters and rescue groups. The response from these groups has been amazing - they support our work and say over and over again the show has helped them to successfully adopt the animals in their care.

One example:
Hi Gary,

I wanted to let you know that at our PetSmart adoptions yesterday we placed 11 puppies and dogs into new homes and 3 people came because of that morning's Pet Place show! Thank you for the opportunity to share our puppies with your audience and please pass on my thanks to the entire team : )

Jodi
www.CuddlyCanines.com

Southeast Area Animal Control is returning to our show and the good news is that the shelter has a full-time adoption manager now, Vicky Hernandez, whose mission is to get the word out on adoptions and she told us appearing on Pet Place is a very important part of that process.

Rescue groups and shelters support our work, and several of you have donated to us in recent weeks - but
WE NEED YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT more than ever to get us through March and into April, 2008. We need to raise $5,000 to cover the airtime and production costs for March and April programs. Any amount is appreciated, but even if 100 of you reading this could send $50, we would meet our goal and be able to stay on the air.

We are still awaiting word on corporate sponsorship for 2008, but in the meantime, we must pay our bills on time -
if you have never donated before, consider it NOW. Everyone who donates will be acknowledged in a on-screen credit at the end of the show.

Donations should be made to: The Pet Place
and mailed to: PO Box 16806, Irvine, CA 92623.

PayPal donations are also accepted.

The Pet Place is a non-profit organization and your donations are tax deductible. Please send your contribution to The Pet Place, PO Box 16806, Irvine, CA 92623.

If you have comments or suggestions, or would like to be added to a planned e-mail list on upcoming news and activities, please e-mail executive producer Gary Lycan at garylycan@sbcglobal.net or editor-producer-director Marie Hulett at marie@marijeproductions.com. Include your name, address, phone number and e-mail address.

And, remember to support Ralphs and its Pet Club, our main supporting partner for the past two years and, we hope, for 2008. Thank you for supporting the Pet Place and Fred's Dream.

Pet Place TV Show watchers are encouraged to watch the Sunday, Feb. 17 Pet Place show at 6:30 a.m. on KDOC-TV. The program will show adoptable animals from several shelters and rescue groups and those "hosts" will share their memories of Fred Bergendorff.

The Feb. 17 show was taped Sat., Feb. 9 at the Irvine Animal Care left. Many who appeared were still going through the grieving process; all expressed hope the work that Fred did for so many years will continue on The Pet Place. Participants included Kathy Graves, Irvine; Kerrie Morgan, OCA; Russell Taylor, Modjeska Ranch Rescue; Aaron Reyes, Seaaca; Lance Hunter, LA County - Baldwin Park; Vicky Hernandez, Seaaca; Shirley Vaughn, Friends of Long Beach Animals; Deborah Turner; Diane Sandison; Maryanne Dell, OC Register & Pet Place Radio Show; Tammy Trujillo, KFWB anchor; Lynne Bartos, Greyhound Pets of America; Mickey Laszlo, new Pet Place host; Gary Lycan, executive producer. Marie Hulett and her production company did an outstanding job. John Gonzales could not attend, but was taped a day earlier. The videotaped memories will be in the TV show, time permitting, and all will be in the video to be shown at the "Celebration of Fred's Life" event to be held in about one month or so.

From Gary Lycan, executive producer: "The Pet Place is a total team effort, and it would not be possible without three key people in my life and the show: editor-producer-director Marie Hulett, host Mickey Laszlo, and the person who keeps me lefted, focused and puts a smile on my face every day - Hazel Wurfl. Plus, of course, the 'love in the room' from the shelters and rescue groups; and everyone at Ralphs Grocery, KDOC-TV and KGIL 1260 & 540 AM."

Details on the "Celebration" event will be posted here on the website. Keep coming back for updates.......

Fred Bergendorff 1944-2008

Fred Bergendorff, 63, longtime KNX/1070 AM marketing director and creator of The Pet Place TV and radio shows, died January 27th in Brea after a long illness.

Bergendorff created the TV show in the early 1990's, first on the cable system in Long Beach and then on KDOC-TV, where it continues today on Sunday mornings with new host Mickey Laszlo.

A radio version of the TV show began in 2006 with KGIL 540 & 1260 AM. It continues Saturday mornings with Marie Hulett as host.

"Fred's goal was to find homes for all the adoptable animals.", said Gary Lycan, senior producer of the TV and radio shows, "and it was Fred's desire that it would be his legacy and our goal to continue his rewarding work to help shelters and rescue groups throughout Southern California. And that is our plan."

Bergendorff retired from KNX in 2002. He was hospitalized in October, 2007 for multiple muscular and nerve problems. He was receiving long-term therapy at Kindred Hospital Brea at the time of his death.

A "Celebration of Fred's Life" will be held in about one month, details to be announced, but the idea is to welcome all of Fred's friends and colleagues to an afternoon of memories, storytelling, and the kind of fun day Fred would appreciate. Pets, of course, welcome, too.

And a big THANK YOU!!! to everyone who has called or e-mailed to offer their support and encouragement for The Pet Place show to continue. You are all helping to keep Fred's dream alive, and if our funding is renewed, the show will go on, with Fred looking down on more adoptable animals from the area shelters and rescue groups. We are also considering introducing on the TV show a, "Fred" award to be given on a monthly basis to people or groups who are heroes to animals. So THANK YOU!!! for helping keep Fred's dream alive.

Please click here to read some great memories of Fred being shared.
